My artwork - where is it going

by Barry

Posted 18-Jul-2015

I have had problems for a couple of years after an illness and bad back made it difficult to stand and cope with the weight of screen printing. Glass is very heavy and I badly damaged my back on a large piece of glass which remained for ages in the kiln.

Suddenly I notice the change in age - the ability to deal with weight seemed to have creeped up. The ability to deal with the cold and getting tired and needing to take things a bit easier. After all I reached retirement age and notice it. The studio at Red herring was a godsend when I started to use it. Lots of space and cheap. Now it doesn't work as communal space means that whilst sharing the space would be a good idea is not an option. Also I can not cope with the lack of heating. A few years ago clothing would work. Now I just suffer with chills. After ages of denial I decided it was a time to change and have now sold my equipment and left the studio. Have been doing computer work, computer generated artwork and also lots of life drawing. I have also been learning programming of which this website written in php and mysqli is a result. I need to look at what my artwork should be and am downsizing to still do prints but using relief printing and am in trying to get a new smaller space and a small relief press. I am also going to try and work with 3D printing to prepare some of the plates. I am also thinking of doing some etching but I do not like using nitric acid as it makes my teeth tingle and am thinking of exploring acrylic options.

Barry's new artwork
When I realised that I could no longer cope with the weight of screens and media I had little choice but to think about the future and my artwork post having the studio. Initially this was trying digital and also going back to doing more life drawing. Neither reached the spot. Dana suggested that I go back to Architecture which I should have done some nearly fifty years ago.
